For the very first time in India, our Researchers have developed advanced Deep Learning Models that can predict thunderstorm evolution — up to 30 minutes in advance—using C-band Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) observations. These models are set to transform how we prepare for thunderstorms and lightning, significantly enhancing safety for communities across the region. This achievement represents a thrilling leap forward in our capabilities to manage and reduce weather-related hazards!

In a momentous celebration of Earth Day 2025, the National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS) had the honour of hosting renowned Geoscientist Prof. Harsh Gupta, Padma Shri Awardee and esteemed President of the Geological Society of India. With an impressive resume that includes roles as the Former Secretary of MoES, Former Director of CESS, and Former Director of CSIR-NGRI, Prof. Gupta captivated the audience with his compelling lecture, "Setting up of Dakshin Gangotri in Antarctica: A Miracle."
The event kicked off with an inspiring welcome address by Prof. N.V. Chalapathi Rao, Director of NCESS, who also took the time to honour Prof. Gupta for his remarkable contributions to the field. In an exciting highlight of the day, Prof. Gupta inaugurated the cutting-edge Sedimentology and Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) laboratories at NCESS, underscoring the institution's commitment to advancing earth science research.

Chalapathi Rao, Director, National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS), was the Chief Guest today during the Inaugural function of the Science Academies' Lecture Workshop on "Groundwater Prospecting and Management: A Future Scenario (GPMFS-2025)." This event, hosted by the PG and Research Department of Geology at V.O. Chidambaram College (V.O.C. College) in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, gathered a distinguished audience. In his address, Prof. Rao elaborated on "Water Vision @2047", which aspires to achieve comprehensive water security and the sustainable management of water resources, including Groundwater, by the year 2047, coinciding with the centenary of India's independence. He underscored the significance of community engagement and the necessity of addressing the implications of climate change within this strategic framework.

New Research Published

A new research by the National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS) identified the shallow precipitating systems using collocated in-situ observations during the southwest monsoon season. The shallow precipitating systems produce heavy rain by the active collision-coalescence process. The collision-coalescence process is enhanced with the rain intensity and duration of shallow systems, as evidenced by the widening of the raindrop spectra.

Chalapathi Rao, Director, National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS), ceremonially unfurled the Indian National Flag in commemoration of the 76th Republic Day celebrations at the NCESS campus. In his address to the NCESS community, Prof. Rao paid rich tribute to the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters. He acknowledged the diligent efforts of the NCESS scientific community in achieving significant milestones and encouraged ongoing endeavours to advance India towards a Viksit Atmanirbhar Bharat by the year 2047, emphasizing the pivotal role of NCESS in realizing this national aspiration. NCESS Staff and their family members actively participated in the event with great fervour and pride, embracing the theme "Swarnim Bharat- Virasat aur Vikas". Wishing all a very Happy Republic Day.
